Online theory before water sessions: avoid mixing incompatible course packages
GotGear and DiveHarbour share an owner; this collection is not an independent recommendation. GotGear is not a diving school and does not provide dive training. Articles are general information, not practical training, instructor guidance or individual medical clearance to dive. Original concept images are not real course records. No certification or safety outcomes are promised.
The short answer
Online theory can fit around work, but choose the intended certification route and confirm the receiving school’s requirements before buying or activating materials. A digital learning product is not automatically a complete course, a referral or credit towards another agency’s programme. Ask for written confirmation of the exact product, accepted completion record, remaining instructor-led training and package inclusions. If you already own materials, disclose them before paying for anything else rather than assuming they will replace the school’s required learning package.

A beginner can buy the wrong course component without choosing a poor learning resource. The mistake is usually an assumption: that any product labelled ‘Open Water’ will fit whichever practical course looks convenient afterwards. The useful question is not simply whether the lessons teach scuba theory. It is whether the exact product and its completion record fit the certification route and training arrangement you intend to book.
This GotGear guide is about that purchasing decision, not underwater techniques. GotGear does not provide diving training. The DiveHarbour information links below lead to a website under the same ownership as GotGear; they are enquiry resources, not an independent provider endorsement. Practical instruction belongs with a qualified instructor, and individual medical suitability belongs with a qualified healthcare professional.
Online theory is a component, not a finished qualification
PADI describes eLearning as a way to complete the knowledge-development portion of its courses at your own pace, then finish training in the water with a PADI Professional. Its official referral guide separates Open Water Diver training into knowledge development, confined-water work and open-water dives. Completing the first element does not establish completion of the others. 1
That distinction matters when a checkout page uses the word ‘course’. You may be purchasing access to a digital learning product rather than the full combination of teaching, water sessions and certification processing. SSI explicitly lists training materials, tuition, open-water training and certification as components that a training centre may charge separately or bundle together. Those SSI categories are helpful comparison prompts, not a statement of another school’s inclusions. 2
Ask the school to describe the end point of what you are buying. Will the purchase provide a theory completion record, a documented partial-training referral or a route to certification once all requirements are met? These are different outcomes. A payment receipt proves a purchase; it does not prove that the instructor has assessed you or that you have earned a qualification.
Match the agency and exact product before activation
Start with the proposed certification agency and full course title, not just ‘beginner diving’. A school offering several agency routes should identify which route applies to your enquiry. The learning platform, account and materials should then be checked against that route. Do not infer that a school’s ability to offer several programmes makes their learning products interchangeable.
For a PADI-specific enquiry, the PADI eLearning Open Water Hong Kong information page can help you frame the next question: which exact PADI product should this learner obtain, and how will it connect to the proposed water sessions? Ask for the answer before purchasing a separate product or activating a code. The page is an information starting point, not confirmation that every package accepts previously purchased materials.
PADI’s FAQ states that the eRecord received after completing online study is accepted by PADI dive centres, resorts and instructors worldwide. That is an explicit statement about acceptance within the PADI network. It is not a blanket promise that a different agency will treat PADI materials as its own required academic component. 1
SSI, meanwhile, describes a MySSI profile and selection of an SSI Training Center as a training partner. Its official page also explains that students can change affiliation or affiliate with multiple centres. Those account arrangements belong to SSI’s system; they should not be applied to PADI accounts by analogy. 2
If you already own online materials
Send the intended school the product title, agency, chosen language and completion status. Explain whether you have only purchased access, started studying or finished the required online work. These stages should not be compressed into ‘I have done the theory’. Let the school specify which evidence it needs and how to send it securely; do not share your password.
Ask for a decision about the exact item rather than a general comment that online learning is accepted. If you are changing agency, ask whether the proposed route requires different materials, additional academic work or a documented transfer arrangement. A cross-agency option may require individual assessment, so do not assume either automatic acceptance or automatic rejection.
Compare what each package actually contains
Two offers can look different because they cover different parts of the learning journey. Comparing only the headline description can make a theory-only purchase appear equivalent to a fuller training package. Use the same categories for each quote and leave an item marked ‘unconfirmed’ until the school answers it.
| Arrangement being considered | Evidence to request | Question that prevents a mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| Online theory purchased separately | Exact agency product and accepted completion record | Which training, support and certification items remain to be arranged? |
| Materials supplied with a school package | Written inclusion list and activation instructions | Is this the required product for the selected certification route? |
| Theory already finished elsewhere | Receiving school’s response to the actual record | What academic review or additional work is required? |
| Theory and some water training completed elsewhere | Instructor-issued record of completed training | Which parts are accepted and which remain outstanding? |
| Proposed change to another agency | Written explanation of the proposed pathway | Are new materials or additional assessment required? |
The table is an enquiry tool, not a universal training standard. In particular, ‘already purchased’ does not establish entitlement to a reduction in a school’s package charge. Ask whether the school offers a suitable arrangement for learners bringing their own accepted materials, and request its written scope. Do not subtract the digital component yourself and assume that the balance is the school’s practical-training charge.
Ask separately about equipment provision, any venue or boat arrangements, required forms and certification processing. If something is conditional, request the condition in plain language. An item included for one arrangement is not necessarily included when you split training between providers. PADI’s referral guidance specifically advises contacting the receiving shop to confirm the schedule and costs of completing training, including applicable equipment and boat items. 3
A completion record and a referral do different jobs
Online completion documents show academic progress within a learning system. A referral records training completed with an instructor so that another instructor can understand what has been done. PADI’s official guide explicitly distinguishes eLearning from a referral and explains that a student referral form can identify completed skills and dates. 3
For a theory-only learner, the practical question is what the school needs to see before organising instructor-led training. For someone who has also attended water sessions elsewhere, the question becomes more detailed: what has the previous instructor documented, and what will the receiving instructor accept? A screenshot of a learning dashboard should not be assumed to answer both questions.
Changing schools within the same agency
PADI’s FAQ says that the dive centre associated with its online programme cannot be changed after registration, while explaining that the completed eRecord is accepted elsewhere within the PADI network. It also says the choice of where to complete training is yours. Account association and choice of completing instructor are therefore not the same issue. 1
That does not establish a booking, availability or agreed package with a new school. Send the record and ask the receiving school to confirm its proposed arrangement. If earlier practical training is involved, include the relevant instructor-issued documentation rather than relying only on the online record. Ask the receiving school what current validity requirements apply to your specific records and training dates.
Changing agencies is a separate enquiry
A plan to continue with a different certification agency needs an explicit answer from the receiving school. State which agency issued the existing materials and which agency you want to finish with. Ask it to identify the requirements for that route and any further academic work or assessment, rather than requesting a vague ‘transfer’.
Do not confuse recognition of an already-earned certification with acceptance of a beginner’s unfinished learning package. In this situation you are asking what counts towards an incomplete course. Even if a provider advertises multiple agencies, that alone does not tell you how the unfinished records will be handled or which certification could ultimately be issued.
Check language and support as well as access
A platform being available in a language does not establish the language of the instructor’s briefings or explanations. Ask separately about the learning product, the instructor-led sessions and the channel for theory questions. If you prefer Cantonese explanations while reading English materials, make that preference clear before confirming the arrangement.
When reviewing Hong Kong scuba lessons for beginners, use the information to ask what support connects home study to the practical course. Clarify whether the proposed lessons are an introductory experience or a certification programme, which agency applies, and how unanswered theory questions will be discussed. ‘Beginner’ describes a learner’s starting point; it does not by itself define the course outcome.
Also confirm the required device or platform access before activation. If your work computer has restricted access, or you expect to study while travelling, check the official product’s current technical requirements. Keep account ownership and learner identity clear from the start. If a gift or family purchase is involved, ask how each learner receives the correct individual access and records.
Build a realistic handover from study to water sessions
Self-paced study gives flexibility over when you read; it does not mean the school can provide water sessions whenever you finish. Ask when the academic work must be ready for the proposed dates, how completion will be checked and when there will be an opportunity to ask questions. Allow room for genuine understanding rather than treating completion as a last-minute booking formality.
Discuss required administrative and medical forms early. SSI’s official course page lists training-record forms, a medical statement or physician’s approval where required, and instructor completion records among its requirements. The particular forms for your chosen route should come from the school or relevant agency. An online study result is not personal medical clearance. 2
For Hong Kong arrangements, request written confirmation of the actual dates and meeting details. A named area on an information page is not proof of a fixed departure point or guaranteed boat outing. Ask who communicates changes and what happens to incomplete training if conditions or personal circumstances disrupt the schedule. Do not assume automatic rescheduling, extra sessions without charge or completion by a particular deadline.
An example: buying first can create duplicate work
Consider a hypothetical learner who buys PADI Open Water eLearning, then enquires about an SSI beginner package because its proposed dates suit their diary. The learner expects the online purchase to remove the academic component from the SSI package. The problem is not that one learning resource has no educational value; it is that the learner has not established how it fits the intended certification route.
The next move is to disclose the existing product and ask the school to explain the available options. Depending on the school’s verified answer, the learner might investigate a PADI route using the accepted record, or decide to follow the SSI route with the materials and work that it requires. The hypothetical example does not establish either option’s availability at DiveHarbour or a right to exchange a purchase.
If the learner has already completed instructor-led sessions elsewhere, they should also request the previous instructor’s training records. That changes the enquiry from ‘Can I use this online product?’ to ‘What documented training can be recognised in the proposed arrangement?’ Getting that distinction right helps the receiving school respond to the actual situation.
Before paying, close the unanswered questions
Use this checklist once you have a proposed course, not as a substitute for the school’s assessment. Each answer should relate to the named learner and the actual package under discussion.
- Confirm the certification agency and full course title in writing.
- Identify the exact learning product, language and intended learner before activating access.
- Disclose existing materials and obtain a written answer on their acceptance.
- Ask which academic record or instructor-issued referral documents are required.
- Obtain an inclusion list showing remaining training, equipment and any applicable venue or boat items.
- Confirm the theory deadline, question support and required administrative or medical forms.
- Request the current payment, non-refund, cancellation and make-up-session terms, including what applies if training remains incomplete.
When you are ready to book a scuba diving course in Hong Kong, carry those answers into the enquiry rather than assuming the booking page settles them. Ask DiveHarbour for one written response identifying the route, treatment of existing materials, remaining requirements and applicable terms. If the English and Chinese wording appears different, clarify the difference before payment; do not infer a refund or change entitlement.
The most useful purchase is the one that fits an agreed training route. Choose the intended certification first, verify the exact materials and records, then agree the remaining course scope. Online theory can make scheduling easier, but it should never be used to bypass instructor-led requirements or to turn an unresolved compatibility question into a paid commitment.

Common questions
Can I use PADI online theory for an SSI beginner course?
Do not assume it will replace SSI’s required academic component. Tell the receiving school the exact PADI product and your completion status, then ask what the proposed SSI route requires. PADI’s published eRecord acceptance statement concerns its own network. Any cross-agency arrangement needs a specific explanation, including further materials or assessment if required.
Is finishing eLearning the same as obtaining a referral?
No. Online completion documents record academic progress, while a referral documents completed training for another instructor. PADI explicitly distinguishes the two. If you have attended water sessions elsewhere, request the previous instructor’s relevant records and ask the receiving school which documents it needs. Do not assume a theory dashboard proves completion of practical training.
Will a school reduce its package charge if I already own materials?
That depends on the school’s written offer, not on your purchase receipt alone. Ask whether it provides an arrangement for your exact accepted materials, what remains included and which charges still apply. Do not deduct a digital component yourself or assume an exchange, refund or make-up-session entitlement. Resolve package compatibility and terms before paying again.
