Comparing an SSI course: ask about the teaching plan, not only the agency

GotGear and DiveHarbour share an owner; this collection is not an independent recommendation. GotGear is not a diving school and does not provide dive training. Articles are general information, not practical training, instructor guidance or individual medical clearance to dive. Original concept images are not real course records. No certification or safety outcomes are promised.

The short answer

An SSI course is easier to compare when you ask how the school will deliver the training, not simply which agency appears on the certificate. Request a written plan covering academic learning, supervised water sessions, instructor arrangements, assessment and support if you need more time. Then check what the package includes and what happens if a session cannot proceed. The agency's published programme information is a useful reference, but it does not confirm a particular school's dates, charges or suitability for you.

Two courses carrying the SSI name can still differ in the arrangements that matter to a beginner: when teaching happens, how questions are answered, which equipment is supplied and how unfinished training is handled. Compare these details before deciding that a shorter timetable or a simpler package description is better. An agency label helps identify the programme; it does not explain every part of the service you are being offered.

This guide is about enquiries and course selection, not practising diving skills. Scuba diving carries significant risks, and practical training belongs with a qualified instructor. GotGear does not provide diving courses. GotGear and DiveHarbour share an owner, so the DiveHarbour information links below are related-site resources, not independent provider endorsements.

What SSI's programme description can tell you

SSI's official Open Water Diver page describes a programme combining personalised training with in-water practice. Its published facts distinguish academic sessions, pool or confined-water sessions, and open-water sessions. These are different learning components, so a quote that mentions only online study and a sea outing needs further explanation. Ask the school to show where each component appears in the proposed plan. 1

The same SSI page currently lists six academic sessions, six pool or confined-water sessions and four open-water sessions. Those figures describe SSI's published programme structure; they are not a promise of six separate teaching days or a particular Hong Kong timetable. Ask how sessions are organised, which requirements apply to your enrolment and how progress is assessed before the next stage. Do not convert a session count into a guaranteed completion date. 1

Confined-water training refers to the controlled-water part of the programme, distinct from open-water training. For course selection, the useful question is where that teaching will take place and what arrangements support learning there. A location label by itself says little about changing facilities, access, travel or whether the venue has been confirmed for your dates.

When reviewing an SSI Open Water course Hong Kong information page, use it to establish the programme being discussed, then request the proposed teaching sequence in writing. Ask the school to distinguish confirmed arrangements from provisional ones, including the learning language and the location of each water component. A course page is an enquiry starting point, not proof that a suitable place is available.

Ask how the learning will work for you

A teaching plan should explain what you prepare independently and what happens with an instructor. This matters if you work irregular hours, need help with unfamiliar vocabulary or cannot commit to consecutive weekends. Tell the school about these scheduling needs before accepting its plan. There is no advantage in agreeing to a timetable that leaves no realistic opportunity to study or ask questions.

Digital access is not the whole teaching plan

SSI says students need a MySSI profile to start training. Its official page describes the app as a place for training materials, a logbook and certification cards, with online and offline access. These features explain the platform's role, but do not establish exactly when a particular centre will activate your course materials or what support its package includes. 1

Ask which language versions are available for the materials being assigned to you, and separately ask which language the instructor will use. Being able to read an English page does not necessarily mean you will be comfortable discussing an unfamiliar concept in English during a busy training day. Request a clear contact route for study questions and ask whether an academic review is included before water training.

Also clarify account ownership and access. You should know which personal email address will be associated with your profile, what information the centre needs and how you can access your own records. Avoid giving someone your usual password simply because registration appears convenient. Ask the centre to explain its registration process rather than guessing how the platform works.

Support matters more than a claim about personal attention

Ask how many learners are expected in the proposed teaching group, who will instruct it and what assistance is planned. These are questions about the actual course, not an invitation to invent a universal group-size rule. If a school cites an agency limit, ask which current standard and training circumstances it is referring to. Do not assume one figure applies to every setting.

More importantly, ask what happens when learners progress at different rates. Will the instructor explain the next arrangement individually? Can you raise a concern privately? How are extra teaching needs recorded and discussed? A useful answer describes a process and any associated terms. A vague promise that everyone will finish together does not resolve the question.

Compare the package, not just its headline description

SSI's official course page identifies training materials or a digital kit, academic and in-water tuition, open-water training dives, and certification as cost components. It says these may be charged separately or packaged, depending on the training centre. That is a reason to request an itemised explanation, not evidence that every school includes the same things. 1

Use the SSI scuba course price Hong Kong page as a starting point for questions about DiveHarbour's package. Before paying, ask which items apply to your proposed enrolment and obtain a current written quotation. A listed package should not be treated as confirmation that transport, personal equipment, additional training or every administrative item is covered.

The comparison below is a reader's enquiry framework, not a statement of SSI requirements or any provider's terms. Fill it from written replies so that you compare the same scope rather than two differently described offers.

Compare this item Ask the school to clarify Why the answer matters
Academic learning Materials, access timing, language and instructor review Shows what you prepare and what support is included
Controlled-water teaching Proposed venue and teaching arrangements Makes the learning setting and travel needs clearer
Open-water component Planned arrangements and what remains provisional Separates a proposal from a confirmed itinerary
Equipment Supplied items, fitting arrangements and required personal items Prevents assumptions about what you must bring
Certification administration Included processing and how records become accessible Clarifies the administrative part of completion
Additional sessions Conditions, availability and any extra charges Explains the consequences of needing more time

For equipment, ask about fit as well as availability. A package described as including equipment may still leave questions about sizes, substitutions or items you must obtain yourself. If a school suggests a purchase, ask whether it is required for this course or simply optional. This article does not assess equipment suitability; fitting and practical use should be discussed with the instructor.

Check who is responsible for your training

A course comparison should identify the instructor who is expected to teach, the centre arranging the programme and the route for verifying relevant SSI status. SSI provides a centre locator and explains that students select a training centre as their training partner during registration. Use the agency's own resources where relevant, and ask how to verify the assigned instructor rather than relying on a biography alone. 1

For a Hong Kong diving school enquiry, request the name and relevant teaching qualification of the proposed instructor, together with a way to check current status with the agency. If staffing is not yet final, ask when it will be confirmed and who handles questions in the meantime. An advertised background is a provider's statement until independently verified.

Distinguish the person answering sales messages from the person responsible for instruction. Both roles can be helpful, but a booking reply may not resolve an educational question. If the answer to a learning concern is simply that you can ask on the day, consider whether you have enough information to commit now. You can request clarification without demanding a guarantee of individual results.

Resolve medical paperwork before committing to water dates

DAN advises divers to complete medical information honestly and plan ahead, rather than let time or money already spent create pressure to omit a concern. It also states that instructors and dive-shop staff are not physicians and should not be asked to provide medical clearance. The practical course-selection question is therefore how to obtain the required paperwork early, not whether a salesperson thinks you will be fine. 2

UHMS describes a three-part screening system: a participant questionnaire, a physician's evaluation form when physician approval is necessary, and medical guidance for physicians. It notes that documents are revised and recommends the most recent version available in the language required. Ask the school which current documents it uses and follow their instructions; do not answer from memory or substitute a simplified message exchange. 3

If medical evaluation is indicated, arrange it with a qualified medical professional. The school can explain its administrative requirements, but it cannot replace an individual clinical assessment. This guide cannot decide whether a condition, symptom or medication is compatible with diving. Also ask how pending paperwork affects enrolment and payment under the school's written terms, without assuming a refund or automatic rescheduling entitlement.

SSI separately lists a water-fitness evaluation before open-water training and required training-record forms. These are enrolment and training matters to discuss with the centre; completing a medical form does not answer every participation question. Request an explanation of the applicable fitness assessment and how it fits into the timetable, rather than attempting to learn or test diving skills independently. 1

Separate a planned timetable from promised completion

Ask for the proposed dates and identify which depend on venue access, instructor scheduling, boat arrangements or conditions. A reference to a coastal area does not establish a fixed meeting point, a branch or a guaranteed departure. Confirm where you would meet, how confirmation will be sent and who makes decisions about whether the activity proceeds.

Then ask about two different situations: a session cannot take place, or you attend but need further training. These may have different consequences. Get the applicable cancellation, non-refund and make-up terms before paying, including any conditions and additional charges. If Chinese and English wording appears inconsistent, request written clarification rather than choosing the interpretation you prefer.

Completion should not be presented as a reward for attendance alone. SSI lists a programme-specific completion record prepared by the instructor before certification. Ask how you will be told about your progress and any unfinished requirements. Neither an advertised duration nor payment establishes that you will meet the programme's requirements on the planned final day. 1

Keep any later travel plans flexible enough to accommodate uncertainty in course completion. Do not book a future activity on the assumption that a certificate will definitely be issued beforehand. The provider of that future activity may also have its own participation checks, so clarify those separately rather than treating a course booking as universal acceptance.

Send one enquiry that produces comparable replies

You do not need to send a long questionnaire about every possible scenario. Start with the information that affects your ability to join and your understanding of the offer. State your preferred learning language, realistic availability and previous water-learning experience without making a claim about medical fitness. Request the medical documents through the school's appropriate channel instead of sharing a detailed health history in an ordinary sales chat.

Use this checklist before accepting the plan:

  • Confirm the exact SSI programme and proposed instructor arrangements.
  • Obtain a teaching sequence covering academic, controlled-water and open-water learning.
  • Clarify material access, teaching language and how study questions are handled.
  • Request written inclusions, exclusions and required personal equipment.
  • Obtain the relevant medical forms and administrative deadlines.
  • Read the applicable non-refund, cancellation and make-up terms.
  • Ask how progress, additional teaching needs and certification records are communicated.

Save the replies with the quotation you are considering. If a plan changes later, ask for the revised version so that you know which arrangements now apply. This is more useful than remembering a reassuring phrase from an earlier conversation. It also gives you a precise basis for a follow-up question.

Judge the reply by what it actually explains

Consider a hypothetical comparison. One reply says that the SSI package includes everything and can be completed quickly. Another separates learning components, identifies provisional dates and explains the process for discussing further sessions. The second is easier to evaluate because it exposes details, not because this article has tested either provider or established which teaches better.

An honest answer may leave some arrangements pending. That is not automatically a problem if the school states what is unresolved, when it expects to confirm it and what terms apply before you commit. What matters is whether the uncertainty is visible and acceptable to you. Do not mistake confidence in a sales message for confirmation of a teaching plan.

Choose only when the programme, delivery arrangements and written conditions fit your needs well enough to make an informed decision. SSI's official information can anchor questions about the programme. The school's reply must explain the actual service, while qualified instructors and medical professionals retain their respective responsibilities. The point of comparing is not to find a logo that removes uncertainty, but to understand what you are agreeing to.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Do SSI's published session counts tell me how many days to book off work?

No. A session count describes programme components, not necessarily separate calendar days. Ask the centre how those components are scheduled for your enrolment, which dates remain provisional and what preparation is expected between them. Confirm leave only after understanding the proposed arrangements and the applicable terms if training needs to continue later.

What should I ask if an SSI package is described as including everything?

Request a written breakdown of materials, tuition, water training, equipment and certification administration. Ask separately about transport, required personal items and further teaching if needed. Compare the scope of the replies rather than assuming that identical package labels cover identical services. The current quotation and written conditions should resolve those questions before payment.

Can the school confirm medical suitability when it accepts my booking?

Booking acceptance is not medical clearance. Ask for the required current medical documents early and answer them honestly. Where the screening instructions require physician involvement, consult a qualified medical professional. The school can explain its paperwork and scheduling requirements, but an instructor or sales adviser cannot replace an individual medical evaluation.
